Meet Douglas D. Schumann
We at the Gobble Gobble Four Miler™ would like to take a moment to publicly thank Doug and his partner Sandi J Davies. for both their financial support to St Matthew’s House and participation in local running events over the years.
Their philanthropic gifts are hardly limited to running events in Naples. Doug has also been a training partner to many of us who like to run and compete. His drive to run fast is a lifestyle that has kept him fit for many years. He thinks of it as his health insurance plan and takes his health and fitness very seriously.
Though Doug and Sandi travel the world together they always make time for area races, biking, running and swimming wherever they are. Having traveled the globe for many years Doug says when asked where his favorite destination is he always replies, Naples, FL.
Doug also has set a great example of giving back to places of higher learning through endowing scholarships. The Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts and the University of New Haven in New Haven, Connecticut. Of particular interest is the fact that both scholarships are based on valuable personal traits such as a quiet but able confidence and a can do attitude rather than GPA. A professor’s chair is also endowed at WIT.
Doug has also supported Outward Bound through an endowed scholarship. This scholarship takes a high school student from the small community in Maine where Doug has a manufacturing plant, and places them in a two week program for development of their self reliance and team-work skill building.
Doug has great respect for those with integrity, deliberate goal setting and the personal willingness to push beyond where things are comfortable. Doug has hired many people he has met in the running community, placing them in key positions for both his personal affairs and business roles. Inherent trust and loyalty are traits he has found from these folks too.
While Doug is well into the Grand Masters division, he is competitive with runners less than half his age. His hard work ethic is something that is part of his personality. He makes no excuses and makes practical deliberate decisions over hype. While he could afford the fanciest of nearly anything, he will most often choose the more substantive practical value. This mentality has served him very well in all walks of his life.
Doug and Sandi recognize all we do to put on this event. They are quick to help support so many area charities, to volunteer on race day or packet pickup, and to advise as veteran participants. Doug and Sandi get why the tradition and spirit of the Gobble Gobble Four Miler™ thrives. Their loyalty is a true mark of their character and an indication of quality and integrity. I am proud to call Doug and Sandi not only sponsors, but the heartbeat of this Thanksgiving tradition in Naples.
